Drama & Creative Thinking

Drama is one of the few avenues that teaches real world skills with elements of play and independent exploration, with countless other benefits supporting the personal development of students.

Through our Drama and Creative Thinking Programs, students are taught to think in new and creative ways, to adapt and respond to changing stimuli and to innovate, empowering students to make their impact in society. Regardless of the production or the visibility of their role, students benefit from performance opportunities that will help them to develop confidence as well as presentation and communication skills, serving them in
their future paths.

What is Drama & Creative Thinking all about?
Our Drama and Creative Thinking programs aim to introduce students to the basics of speech and drama in developing their appreciation for the English Language while allowing them to exercise their creative muscles. Students will be equipped with basic competencies in creative expression through speech and body movement and exposed to theatrical techniques, enabling them to tell stories with confidence and flair. Through seminars and opportunities for exploration, students will be introduced to some basic principles of acting to help them understand the different aspects behind successful theatrical performances. With their new knowledge and understanding, students will also be given the vocabulary and tools to analyse the ways in which body language and facial and oral expressions help convey emotion and meaning or create atmosphere for any given purpose. Students will also learn how various perspectives add richness to a performance and for problem-solving beyond the classroom. They will look at perspectives in terms of how various characters within a play can interpret and understand the same thing in various ways and also perspectives in terms of understanding the psyche of each character. These exercises will build their emotional intelligence and empathy as they develop an understanding of the range of motivations and responses that characterise human experience. These social skills will allow them to more effectively understand the needs of the communities around them to identify how best to empower those around them. In their application of these skills, students will have the opportunity to flex their creative problem solving muscles as the explore various ways of understanding the human experience and in creating their own approaches to various stimuli.

What students will gain?
Through our Drama and Creative Thinking Programmes, students will gain an awareness of speech sounds and improve articulation, be able to communicate characters, poems and stories with clarity and expression, and develop their confidence and competence in interacting and working with a variety of peers, in a variety of contexts. Students will also be given activities that will allow them to overcome their fear and inhibitions of performing or presenting their ideas before an audience in a variety of speaking situations e.g. storytelling, impromptu speaking and persuasive speaking.

Courses

Theatrical Performer

Our Theatrical Performer Series are our introductory programs that provide students with the fundamental skills and perspective to engage in the world of drama. Through the element of experimentation and exploration in play, they will learn the basics of improvisation, devising and acting, while building on their confidence, body consciousness and movement skills. Students will then work together to develop and present a performance to help crystalize their learning experience.

These Theatrical Performer programs cater to younger students who are beginning their journey into creative problem solving and drama. These programs create a safe and structured environment for students to begin building their experience in performance to develop their confidence and critical-thinking and communication skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Gain awareness of speech sounds and improve articulation.
  • Communicate characters, poems and stories with clarity and expression.
  • Interpret and dramatise language in poems and other mediums.
  • Develop confidence and competence in interacting and working with a variety of peers, in a variety of contexts.

Creative Problem Solving

In our Creative Problem Solving programs, students will learn the basics of Design Thinking as a framework to help them understand how to analyze a problem, identify and ideate plausible solutions and to test their solutions. The skills that they will learn from this 5-step process applies to all kinds of problem scenarios, allowing students the confidence to think on their feet and effectively address a wide range of issues.

Through the programs, students will be going through some activities to warm them up to various ways in which problems may arise and need to be addressed. Working in teams, they will be given the opportunity to test their ability to analyze a problem, develop a plausible solution and to execute it with the added element of developing their teamwork and leadership skills. They will then apply their design thinking skills to evaluate the effectiveness of their process and solution and identify ways in which their solutions can be improved. 

The Design Thinking modules are supplemented with drama pedagogies, in particular acting improvisation exercises, to test their ability to think on their feet to present solutions to spur of the moment problems. Students will look at improvisation as a dramatic tool with applications in real life. Through improvisation exercises, students will try first hand the basics of improvisation and how to use it to solve problems. The programs aim to prepare students for the unique demands and challenges of problem-solving through critical thinking. Students will be equipped with competencies to deepen their critical thinking and reasoning skills.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduce and understand the basics of design thinking; 
  • Develop confidence in creating workable solutions in time-sensitive situations;
  • Engage students creativity in the types of solutions they develop
  • Introduce and understand the basics of improvisation; 
  • Develop students confidence and creativity in the types of solutions they develop on the fly
  • Develop conclusions through the following methods:
    – considering the purpose,
    – scoping the question,
    – gathering and utilising information,
    – applying relevant concepts in their argument,
    – considering assumptions and
    – considering other person’s point of view. 
Theatrical Artist

Our Theatrical Artist Series is an in-depth drama experience that provides students with strong skills and perspective to elevate their dramatic capabilities. They will hone their acting, directing, script analysis and script writing skills, with movement and devising workshops that will challenge them to step out of their comfort zone. Students will then develop and present their original performances both as individuals and in groups to give them the opportunities to maximise their artistic potential.

These Theatrical Artist programs cater to older or more experienced students who are looking to stretch their potential in the fields of creative problem solving and drama. These programs provide students the opportunity to create and curate their own performances with trainers offering them guidance and structure that would allow students to flex their creative muscles as best as possible.
